Australians protest use of stun guns

The protesters have called the police investigation flawed.

Roberto Laudisio Curti, 21, was killed last month after being Tasered several times by Sydney police officers over theft allegations.

The victim was shot by officers who say he was fleeing the crime scene. He was accused of stealing a packet of biscuits from a local store in Sydney.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian student’s wealthy family has denied the accusations and has employed a legal firm in Australia to carry out an independent investigation into the case.

The Brazilian government has also voiced concern and demanded an immediate investigation into the deadly incident.

Over the past years, Australian security forces have reportedly imported more than 7,000 tasers from the manufacturer in the US.

According to Amnesty International, in the US alone “at least 500 people have died since 2001 after being shocked with Tasers either during their arrest or while in jail”.

A Taser gun has the capability of inflicting a 55,000-volt shock to a targeted person.
