Bob Katter’s Australian Party candidate for Ashgrove has already taken on Campbell Newman once before in the electorate – and lost.
In March last year, after being a member of the LNP for five years, Norman Wicks, ran for preselection in the electorate having lived in Ashgrove for 15 years.
On the same day he was told he could not run for preselection Mr Newman was announced as the LNP leader – and Ashgrove candidate.
‘‘I think a local member should run for their local electorate,’’ Mr Wicks said today in Enoggera.
‘‘He (Mr Newman) should have run in his own seat.’’
Mr Wicks could put a lot of pressure on Mr Newman taking precious votes away from the LNP though he says he will be taking votes away from both parties.
He said he joined Bob Katter’s Australian Party last year after becoming disillusioned with the LNP and decided to run for the party a few weeks ago.
The ‘‘values’’ of the party had attracted him after seeing the LNP had ‘‘no principles’’ in their preselection process.
‘‘I think it’s unlikely I will win, but I can win, it’s up to the people in Ashgrove,’’ he said.
‘‘I have been speaking to people in the seat and there is an extraordinary vibe in the community.
‘‘They don’t want Labor, but they don’t want the LNP either.’’
Mr Wicks earned the nickname ‘Stormin’ Norman’ or ‘Stormy’ at school in the 70s when he helped run a campaign for a prefect to get elected.
During the launch of his candidacy this morning, state leader of Bob Katter’s Australian Party Aidan McLindon kept referring to him as ‘Stormy’ saying he was going to give Mr Newman a run for his money.
‘‘We have built up a team of candidates with both the will power and the tenacity to give people a choice at the ballot box,’’ he said.
‘‘We have the common sense policies Queensland needs and Stormy is part of that.’’
Both Mr McLindon and Mr Wicks urged people to number every box on the ballot sheet with Mr Wicks saying he had not made any preference deals.
‘‘I have made no decision on preferences at this time, the most important thing is for people to put a number in each box on the ballot and make it count,’’ he said.
Bob Katter was supposed to attend the launch but could not make it due to “unforseen circumstances”.
