Australian Martin Trent Alexander overdoses in Colombia

AN Australian man has been found dead in a hotel room in Colombia.

Martin Trent Alexander, 36, was found dead in the Las Vegas hotel, in downtown Santa Marta.

The El Heraldo website said a cocaine overdose was the suspected cause of death. Traces of cocaine and disposable syringes were found in the room.

A hotel worker discovered the body.

Mr Alexander was last seen on May 11, and hotel staff said they believed he was touring the country.

Santa Marta is used by tourists as a base because it is near several of the country’s attractions.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was “aware of media reports” about the man.

Departmental officials were last night attempting to contact the man’s family.

“The Australian Embassy in Chile (accredited to Colombia) is liaising with local authorities, who are investigating the death,” the spokesman said.
