A Melbourne man has been killed in crossfire while working at a refugee camp in Syria.

The Islamic Society of Victoria has confirmed the death of 23-year-old Roger Abbas from Meadow Heights.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is having difficulty investigating the case because it does not have any diplomatic presence in Syria.

It says its warnings to Australians not to travel to Syria remain current.

State television has also reported that a Syrian Air Force general has been assassinated in Damascus.

It is the latest in a series of attacks on high-level figures from president Bashar al-Assad’s administration.

In July, a bomb killed the country’s defence minister and the president’s brother-in-law.

Syrian state television is blaming the unrest on “terrorists” trying to overthrow the government.
