THE Christmas holiday road toll has risen to eleven after a man died when he crashed his car into a tree near Tamworth in New South Wales on Christmas morning.

The man was driving north along the New England Highway, about 10km north of Wallabadah, when he crashed into a tree at about 10.30am (AEDT) on Sunday.

A passing motorist stopped and attempted to give him first aid while he was trapped inside but the man died at the scene.

The man, believed to be aged in his 20s, is yet to be formally identified.

The fatality was the fourth death in NSW during the Christmas road toll period, and brings the national total up to 11.

Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said the loss of a life on the road was particularly sad at Christmas.

“Again we have seen how quickly lives can be taken on our roads and I urge motorists, riders and pedestrians to take extra care,” assistant commissioner Hartley said in statement.

“It is far more important that you make it to your gathering a little late than not make it at all.

“In a moment a tragedy can occur, and sadly, many people will feel the repercussions of the death of a loved one.

“Put your headlights and seatbelts on, drive to the prevailing road and weather conditions and allow yourself sufficient time to react to what is ahead of you on the road.”

Earlier,  two people died and a dog was injured when a car veered off the road in northern NSW this morning.

The car was travelling south on the Pacific Hwy, South Tweed Heads at about 1.20am (AEDT) today when it left the road and crashed into a steel guard rail.

It then crossed both lanes and crashed into a concrete pillar off the Greenway Driver Overpass.

The 49-year-old male driver suffered severe injuries and died at the scene.

The 50-year-old female passenger was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital, where she later died.

A german shepherd-cross puppy was found in the car and has been taken into police care.
