Australian businesses fined up to $1million over “carbon tax lies”
The Australian – A FITNESS club has become the first business to be fined by the consumer watchdog after it said gym membership fees would rise by as much as 15 per cent because of the carbon tax. GFC Berwick, trading as Genesis Fitness Club, paid a $6600 infringement notice to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) after it sent a letter to its members in April promoting a ”rate freeze” offer. The fitness club said that by taking up the offer, members could avoid a fee increase of 9 to 15 per cent because of the carbon price. In July, the consumer watchdog said it was looking into an internal newsletter sent to bakery chain Brumby’s franchisees, suggesting they raise prices and “let the carbon tax take the blame”. Editorial Comment – By making an example of just a few businesses the Australian Government should quickly be able to persuade all other Australian firms that any negative comments against the Carbon Tax – which incidentally will not change global temperatures one iota – will not be in their commercial interests. As ever, by simply targeting the few, the majority will fall silent.
