Gillard slammed for gay rights stance
-
Legal action has allegedly been launched against the Australian
Army over their handling of an online attack against gay
members.
A Facebook hate page that exposed and threatened gay members of
the army for making a filthy lifestyle decision was launched in
2010, the Melbourne Age reports.
Five defence force personnel, including an army psychologist,
were labelled bum bandits on the page that also had links to
violent and pornographic YouTube video clips showing homosexuals
being executed.
The former solider allegedly behind the page has avoided jail
after a Sydney magistrate found he was suffering from
post-traumatic stress after seeing a fellow soldier fall to his
death in the Solomon Islands.
The Australian Army has allowed gays and lesbians to serve
openly in the military since 1992, but gay rights advocates say
recruits were still wary about declaring their sexuality.
A defence spokeswoman said an internal investigation had found
”the vast majority” of members who signed up to the Facebook page
were unaware it was aimed at vilifying gays.
”Any future involvement in vilification or other unacceptable
behaviour by these members would likely result in disciplinary
and/or administrative action being taken against them,” the
spokeswoman told the Melbourne Age.
The legal action comes on the same weekend 4000 people rallied
in Brisbane to call on the federal government to legalise same-sex
marriage.
Gay rights protestors say Prime Minister Julia Gillard should
stand up for gay rights following US President Barack Obama’s
declaration last week that he supported gay marriage.
