Australia will purchase seven US-made drones for USD 3 billion in an effort to help guarding its borders, a report says.
The Australian newspaper published a report on Saturday saying the unmanned aircraft, with the wingspan of a 737 passenger jet, are planned to be primarily employed by the army for spotting enemy ships and planes in a conflict.
However, they could also be used to detect illegal fishermen and asylum-seeker boats that usually set sail from Indonesia and Sri Lanka, the newspaper added.
The report also stated that Australian Defense Minister David Johnston would soon advise the cabinet to pass first approval to buy the seven US-made MQ-4C Triton drones, which can patrol 40,000 square nautical miles in a single mission.
“As a maritime nation, a capability with this type of coverage must have our attention,” Johnston was quoted as saying.
Under the ongoing Operation Sovereign Borders policy, Australia’s military is turning back asylum-seeker boats in a move that has angered Indonesia.
Stopping the asylum-seeker boats arriving in Australia’s north has been a key policy of the government of Prime Minister Tony Abbott since he came to power last year.
The new stance has not been received positively in Jakarta while there have been negative reports on the maltreatment of asylum-seekers by the Australian military.
An asylum-seeker recently told Australasia’s Fairfax Media that three men on his boat were allegedly forced by the Australian navy personnel to hold their hands against hot engine pipes as a punishment for protesting during a navy turn-back operation.
On February 7, Australian public broadcaster ABC obtained images of the wounds and Fairfax published a new interview with an asylum-seeker on board, Yousif Ibrahim Fasher, who claimed some of the injuries were deliberately inflicted during a protest against the navy restricting access to on-board toilets.
