Australia gets low broadband ranking

Australia’s poor ranking in an international broadband report underpins the need for the national broadband network (NBN), Communications Minister Stephen Conroy says.

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has ranked Australia 21st of 34 nations for fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people, according to data released on Wednesday.

The Paris-based institution calculates that 24.6 per cent of Australians are connected to fixed (wire) broadband as of December 2011, which is below the OECD average of 25.6 per cent.

Australia ranks higher for mobile wireless broadband subscriptions, eighth out of 34 nations with 74.4 connections per 100 people, the OECD says.

Senator Conroy said the OECD’s data showed the importance of rolling out the NBN to all Australians.

“Australia’s future economic and social prosperity will increasingly be tied to the digital economy,” Senator Conroy said in a statement on Wednesday.

He said the government’s investment in the network would ensure Australia kept in line with other developed and developing economies on broadband in the future.

“The NBN’s fast, affordable and reliable broadband will help Australia rise up the OECD broadband rankings, even as other OECD countries develop their own super-fast broadband capabilities,” Senator Conroy said.

Under Labor’s $36 billion project, NBN Co will deliver high-speed fibre optic cable broadband to 93 per cent of homes, schools and businesses across Australia by 2021.

Four per cent will be covered by a fixed wireless network and three per cent will receive broadband by satellite services, with both technologies to be rolled out by 2015.

Switzerland had the highest number of fixed broadband subscribers per 100 people, 39.9, while Korea topped the mobile wireless broadband connections with 100.6 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants, the OECD said.
