Australia floods to displace thousands

Australian State Emergency Service Commissioner Murray Kear said on Saturday that 3,500 people were ordered to evacuate as 75 percent of the country’s most populous state was affected by flooding.

Days of persistent rains have filled Sydney’s Warragamba Dam, the main source of the city’s drinking water, to its capacity for the first time in 14 years.

Late on Friday, the dam started to overflow.

“This is a moderate flood but it’s unusual because we haven’t seen water in this river system in a while,” Kear said.

The town of Bathurst in New South Wales has been cut in two by surging waters and some 2,300 people across the state are totally isolated.

Meanwhile, a warning of more heavy rains and flash flooding has been issued in areas of New South Wales and the southern state of Victoria.
