‘Australia asylum-seeker boat in danger’

Australian activists say a boat carrying more than 150 asylum-seekers from India, including many women and children, is in danger off a remote Australian island.

On Saturday, Refugee Action Coalition said that the boat was located west of Australia’s Indian Ocean territory of Christmas Island.

The boat carrying mostly Tamil asylum-seekers reportedly left India two weeks ago.

“We are refugees. We come from Sri Lanka — we stayed in India and we are unable to live there. That’s why we are coming to Australia,” a man claiming to be on the boat told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The man added that there were 32 women and 37 children on the boat.

Australian Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said there were no significant incidents to report.

“It is our standard practice under Operation Sovereign Borders to report on any significant events regarding maritime operations at sea particularly where there are safety of life at sea issues associated and I am advised I have no such reports to provide.”

If the boat arrives in Australia, it will be the first of such arrivals in six months.

On June 25, Morrison introduced the Migration Amendment (Protection and Other Measures) Bill 2014, making the country’s asylum-seeker policy tougher.

The new changes to the policy will make it difficult for new asylum seekers and those who are already in Australia, as well, to make visa applications.

Over the past few years, Australia has tightened its asylum-seeker policy, refusing residency to unauthorized boat arrivals.
