Aust condolences for Saudi crown prince

The federal government has offered its condolences to Saudi Arabia following the death of Crown Prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz, a brother to King Abdullah.

Prince Nayef, 79, died on Saturday after an illness and his funeral is due to be held on Sunday in the Muslim holy city of Mecca.

“Our thoughts are with His Royal Highness Prince Nayef’s family, and with the people of Saudi Arabia at this time,” Foreign Affairs minister Bob Carr said on Sunday in a statement.

He said Australia extended its deepest condolences on the passing of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior.

“He played a leading role in the kingdom’s efforts to combat extremism and safeguard regional stability, and contributed to bilateral relations with Australia, particularly in the field of regional and international peace and security,” Senator Carr said.
