THE WIFE of an Australian man who needed 20 stitches in his chest after being stabbed during a bar fight in Bali says he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
One of two Australian men stabbed at the Bounty Discotheque near Kuta Beach in the early hours of Friday has returned home while the other remains in a serious condition in a Bali hospital.
Jake Benjamin Whitehead, 21, of Newcastle, who was stabbed in the right armpit and top of the chest, returned to Australia yesterday.
The second victim, Chris Mete, 26, was stabbed in the stomach and is recovering in the intensive care unit at Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar. He has regained consciousness and is in a serious but stable condition.
Mr Whitehead has spoken of being slashed across the chest as he tried to rescue Mr Mete. He needed medical attention after intervening in a five-man brawl between locals.
He told the Nine Network yesterday, ”A Balinese guy with a knife’s come and sort of had a go at me and as I stepped back he sliced straight down there.
”There was a guy near me getting beaten pretty badly so I’ve pulled his attacker off.
”Once the adrenalin wore off, it sort of started to hit home.”
Bali Police said the fight broke out about 2am after the alleged attacker spilled a drink that belonged to one of the victims. Police spokesman Hariadi said, ”He was asked to replace the drink, but then he got angry and there was a fight between the perpetrator and the victims.”
But Mandy Mete said her husband was not involved and was simply standing nearby when it occurred.
”My husband was stabbed by accident,” she said yesterday. ”He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
The Melbourne couple were on holiday in Bali with their two young children.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said Australian consular officials in Bali were talking with local authorities about the incident.
Police in Bali said the attacker was not yet known, but that he was believed to be a foreigner. Two local people whose identities were not known were also injured in the fight.
The bar where the incident occurred is the same place where former North Melbourne AFL coach Dean Laidley was hit over the head with a bottle in October, and his son left with a broken jaw after a fight.
In 2009, a 22-year-old New Zealand man was killed after being attacked by three men who were later convicted of murder. AAP
