A South African court has sentenced an Australian man to nine years in jail for hiring a man to kill the father of a woman he was obsessed with.
Shumsheer Singh Ghumman has been convicted of charges that include incitement to commit murder, fraud and malicious damage.
Ghumman met South African woman Hanna Rhind in London in 2009.
After being convicted by a British court of harassing her, Ghumman travelled to Cape Town where he posed as a freelance journalist wanting to meet a gangster.
In one email to a local news agency, he stated he wanted to meet someone who had absolutely no compunction about behaving with appalling violence.
When the hitman he hoped to hire to kill Ms Rhind’s father pulled out, he firebombed the woman’s home.
Described by the judge as having no remorse, Ghumman will appeal the sentence.
