Aung San Suu Kyi ‘teases François Hollande over his women ministers’

“She has a very discreet humour, not at all exuberant, very English,” he said.

During the meal, Mr Hollande reportedly waxed lyrical about the superiority of French gastronomy over British cuisine, to which his guest replied: “English food has got a lot better in 25 years.”

Burma was for decades ruled by a military junta, but a reformist government under ex-general President Thein Sein has freed political prisoners and allowed Miss Suu Kyi’s party back into mainstream politics.

Freed from house arrest, she has in the past two weeks visited Switzerland, Norway, Ireland, Britain and now France, receiving a hero’s welcome.

On Thursday she visited both houses of France’s parliament – the National Assembly and the Senate – and spoke to students at the Sorbonne university in Paris.

She also had a 45-minute breakfast with former president Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy in a Paris hotel.

On Wednesday, Miss Suu Kyi received her 2004 honorary citizen of Paris certificate and Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said: “For us, you are the lady of human rights.”
