August unrest and unjust sentences

Official figures released by Britain’s Ministry of Justice have revealed that people arrested over their involvement in the unrest which swept across Britain in August received sentences four times longer than those given to people arrested over similar offences a year ago.

The unjust sentences given to those arrested came as the British Justice Minister, Crispin Blunt, said the British government made utmost efforts to ensure justice was served.

“The courts, judges and the probation and prison services have worked hard to make sure that those who attacked their own communities during the public disorder last August have faced justice quickly,” said Blunt.

This comes as more than half of the nearly 3,000 people who appeared before court over involvement in the unrest were sentenced to imprisonment.

The unprecedented unrest erupted in London after the fatal shooting of an unarmed father of four by the British police and soon spread to other parts of the UK.

Several reports maintained that the high rate of unemployment and poverty were the major reasons behind the unrest and a recurrence of the August unrest has been predicted as the British society continues to grapple with dire economic situation and an unemployment rate hitting a 16-year high.
