Attorneys of US teen killer step aside

Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig told the media in Sanford, Florida, on Tuesday that they had not heard from their client who has refused to answer their calls, texts and emails since Sunday.

“He’s gone on his own. I’m not sure what he’s doing or who he’s talking to. I cannot go forward speaking to the public about George Zimmerman and this case as representing him because I’ve lost contact with him,” Sonner said.

Uhrig added, “Whenever we call him, the call goes to voicemail.”

They said that they were astonished to learn that Zimmerman had called the prosecutor personally after they told him not to speak to anyone directly.

Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin on Feb. 26 in Sanford, Florida. He claims that he acted in self-defense.

The death of Martin has sparked a nationwide outrage in the US has as many say that the shooting was racially motivated.

Protesters are also furious since Zimmerman has not been charged with any crime.

A recent Gallup survey found that 73 percent of African Americans believe that Zimmerman would have been arrested, had the victim been white and not black. This is while only 33 percent of white Americans held such an opinion.
