nsnbc : Eyewitnesses near Dukhok reported that Turkish warplanes carried out attacks in in the Iraqi Kurdistan Autonomous Region near the Turkish border, causing panic among non-combatant civilians.
Turkish warplanes were used to launch several attacks against positions of Turkey’s Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) near Dukhok. Local residents who witnessed the warplanes and the strikes reported that the transgression caused widespread panic among non-combatants.
The border region experiences increased tensions as Iraq’s Kurdistan Autonomous Region (KAR) is planning to hold a for Turkey, Iran, and in part Baghdad unacceptable independence referendum on September 25. Tensions over the upcoming referendum have also led to increased Turkish raids against PKK positions in the KAR.
Sarbst Taher, and eyewitness, told local reporters that Turkish warplanes carried out an air strike on Naheel area in al-Amadiyah District, north of Dukhok Province. The air strikes reportedly lasted for one hour. Taher also explained that the attack burned several forests and gardens in the area, and also caused panic among local residents.
It is noteworthy that Turkish troops have resumed air strikes on positions of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) in June 2015 after Turkey’s Islamist AKP government unilaterally ended a bilateral ceasefire agreement and peace talks with the PKK. In 2013 the PKK withdrew its fighters from Turkish territories as part of the ceasefire agreement.
