At midnight, a sigh of relief.

Martin Brady is in charge of the display for the national capital as the city welcomes in 2012. He says that he understands that the public has high expectations for the ‘lights in the sky’.

“So, you know, there’s some performance anxiety until they start going but once they start lifting into the air and everything’s working, it is quite a relief.”

Canberra will have two different fireworks shows on New Year’s Eve 2011/12. The first show, at nine o’clock, is targeted toward families and the aim is to capture the imagination of the little kids in the audience. There will be a couple of new fireworks trialled at that show including an interlaced loveheart and a special outline of a lion’s head.

At midnight, the focus shifts. Brady says that they basically spend the whole year trying to work out how to make that display louder:

“… people are out there with their hands in the air. It’s the end of the year, people are celebrating and we want to make it raucous.”

When asked if he felt his excitable audience appreciates his work, Brady is confident.

“Oh, they’re very vocal…and that’s good, we’re getting some feedback. We can hear it from where we are and our hearing’s diminished….I think people are always pretty appreciative of fireworks. It’s nice.”
