TEN Chinese asylum seekers have abandoned a threat to sail from Darwin to New Zealand in search of refuge, instead opting to take their chances in Australia.

The group, including two children, was taken into detention yesterday in a converted motel after meeting Australian officials and a New Zealand immigration officer, who warned of the dangers crossing the open seas.

The end to the stand-off came as two boats were intercepted off Christmas Island carrying 255 people.

The opposition seized on the latest arrivals to claim people smugglers had made $2.5 million in sending the two boats to Australia and blamed the government for failing on border protection.

The opposition spokesman on immigration, Scott Morrison, accused the asylum seekers of “country shopping” to make their claim by threatening to sail to New Zealand to avoid detention.

But a local solicitor, T.S.Lee, who said he was acting as a “facilitator” for the group because he spoke Cantonese, told the Herald he had also warned the group a boat voyage to New Zealand would be foolhardy.

”I think I frightened them off … New Zealand is too far away, and I said the crocs will most likely eat them. So I said stay here, this is a beautiful country,” he said.

Mr Lee insisted he did not offer legal advice but was asked by a friend in the spiritual group Falun Gong to help. Mr Lee said two of the women on the boat were Falun Gong followers.

The group had been moored on a yacht in Darwin after arriving from Malaysia last week.

After deciding to lodge asylum claims in Australia, they will now be represented by the Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre director, David Manne.

The Immigration Minister, Chris Bowen, said he welcomed the choice to stay in Australia rather than risk a dangerous sea journey.
