Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel, born Emmanuel Rehana Yosip in 1958 in Iraq to a devout Christian family. He subsequently moved to the United States where he was ordained a deacon of the Assyrian Church of the East in 1981, and a priest in 1984 at Mar Gewargis Cathedral (St. George Cathedral) in Chicago, Illinois.
On 3 June 1990, Mar Mari Emmanuel was consecrated as Bishop of Canada. As Bishop, Mar Emmanuel has been an activist in the awareness of the plight of the persecuted Christians of the Middle East.
In 2024, Mar Mari Emmanuel was promoted to Metropolitan Bishop of Australia and New Zealand. This promotion came after his extraordinary work in evangelizing through online networks such as TikTok and Youtube.
Earlier today, Mar Mari Emmanuel was attacked by a man with a knife while preaching. As seen on camera, dozens of parishioners charged the bishop’s attacker and in doing so were injured themselves. Mass riots broke out all over Sydney right after the stabbing. He has since been hospitalized and expected to survive.
Australian police said on Tuesday a 15-year-old boy had been detained over the stabbing of the bishop and a second clergyman at a church in Sydney during a live-steamed sermon.
New South Wales acting assistant commissioner Andrew Holland said the suspect was being treated for wounds to his hand and had been taken to a secure location after the attack sparked a riot in which saw the destruction of police vehicles.
