Waving Syrian Flags and pictures of Assad, pro-government demonstrators converged in Saba’ Bahrat Square on Friday to show massive popular support for the Syrian president’s.
“We, Syrian youths, came here today to express support for President Assad and the Syrian Arab army. We came on our own. No one forced us to come. May God protect Syria and its army,” said a demonstrator.
Demonstrators also condemned foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs and called for national unity, stressing that only a Syrian solution for the months-long crisis would be accepted.
They also condemned acts of violence committed by armed groups and thanked the army for protecting civilians against the terrorist groups.
The pro-Assad demonstrators also thanked the countries that have stood by them in their times of hardship.
Syria has been the scene of mass pro-government rallies in recent months in response to the allegations made by the US and a number of Western countries that the Syrian government no longer enjoys public support.
Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March and many people have lost their lives in the violence.
The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
