Known for her colorful, to die for tie-dye prints, Brooklyn-based eco-fashion designer Shabd Simon-Alexander is dipping her toe in an entirely new print: nude. Currently on view at the Whitney Biennial, “Georgia By Shabd” is a collection of garments and textile-based props custom made for performance artist and political activist Georgia Sagri and her interactive exhibit, called “Working the Now Work.” Worn by the artist during her perfomance, each garment gives the illusion of nudity.
Plus, there are plenty of Simon-Alexander’s classic tie-dye prints on set, which are also conveniently available at the Whitney Shop in the museum and online.

One look at the photos and it’s clear that this fashion statement takes the underwear as outwear trend–a la John Patrick Organic Spring 2012–one step further. In collaboration with Sagri, Simon-Alexander’s garments reveal nude prints that mirror the female form. In fact, the textile prints are Sagri’s own naked body. In a press preview, the artist explained that she is “hiding her naked body within her naked body,” according to Artnet Magazine. “I suppose that’s called ‘meta,'” Sagri continued.
Shabd Simon-Alexander-designed garments and set props will be on view throughout the Biennial. “It is meant to be experienced in depth, both during performances and the rest of the time as well,” she says, according to her newsletter.

As for the performance as a whole, Jerry Saltz at New York Magazine compares Georgia Sagri to a shaman, saying she marched around her installation like some “reincarnated Dada ghost dressed in a T-shirt that makes her look nude.” Emily Nathan at Artnet Magazine on the other hand, compares Sagri’s exhibit to Pee-wee’s Playhouse.

While the garments leave nothing to the imagination, the silhouettes are surprisingly tasteful and even classic. In short, they are Simon-Alexander’s signature style. The nude clothing is not available for purchase but the Simon-Alexander’s tie-dye prints are. Limited edition 100% cotton, hand-dyed Whitney Museum tote bags ($120) are available exclusively at the Whitney Shop in the museum and online. Also in store: select items from her Spring 2012 collection.
