Armed robbers raid Newcastle bank

Armed men have tried to rob a Newcastle bank, injuring two customers.

The men allegedly entered the bank at Wallsend about 4.15pm (AEDT) on Friday and ordered about 20 staff and customers to the ground, police said.

They threatened the bank manager and demanded cash, before dragging two customers to the ground.

They fled the scene empty-handed by car before meeting up with a third man, setting the car alight and leaving the scene in another car.

A short time later, police stopped the car and arrested two men.

A third man was arrested after he was found hiding in a nearby garden.

The men, aged 31, 38 and 56, were charged with attempted armed robbery and refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Saturday.

Two bank customers were taken to Newcastle Hospital with minor injuries.
