Argentineans to protest Prince Rio trip

Members of Clube Argentino in Rio de Janeiro have planned to stage anti-UK protest on Friday when a member of British royal family is to arrive in the city for a two-day diplomatic offensive.

The president of the Argentinean group, Oswaldo Sicardi, stressed that Prince Harry’s visit to Brazil was “in extremely bad taste” just weeks earlier than the 30th anniversary of war between Argentine and Britain over the sovereignty of the South Atlantic archipelago.

The 27-year-old Prince, who is now on a Diamond Jubilee tour to honor the 60th anniversary of UK Queen’s reign, will visit Rio de Janeiro in a bid to improve UK government’s relationships with the Latin American nation.

“I consider the arrival of Prince Harry, straight after the military exercises in the Malvinas an extremely unfortunate decision and one taken in extremely bad taste,” Sicardi said.

He declared that the Prince’s visit to Brazil was planned to change Brazil’s stance in relation to the issue of Malvinas sovereignty. Adding, “I consider it yet another act of provocation by Britain, along with deploying Prince William, sending nuclear submarines and its most powerful warship. Argentineans would be right to show their anger and bring this to the world’s attention.”

Highlighting his group’s protest plans, he also said that the protesters will accompany Harry wherever he goes. Moreover he called on Brazilian ministers to make their own protests if the Prince raises the Malvinas issue.

“If he does try to approach the subject I would hope it would cause a big diplomatic storm across Latin America,” he said.

Harry’s visit comes as the tensions between Buenos Aires and London over the islands sovereignty has heightened.

Last December, the Mercosur nations including Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay agreed to support Argentine’s claim over the archipelago and banned boats sailing under the Falklands flag from docking at certain ports.
