Argentina to circulate Malvinas case

The move comes ahead of the 30th anniversary of the war Argentina and Britain fought over Las Malvinas (the Falklands).

“The UK is not abiding by UN resolutions. It is representing a clear violation of international law. It became [a] member of the Security Council after World War II and has abused its veto power ever since,” said Guillermo Carmona of Argentina’s Lower House Commission on International Affairs.

“We stress Argentina’s specific position to dialogue and criticize British violation of international law,” he reiterated.

The document, which was originally discussed back in February, is supported by all Argentinean political forces.

“There are no discrepancies when it comes to this question; our feelings are the same; there have been no objections,” Julia Argentina Perie, an Argentinean MP, commented on the issue.

“When it has to do with the destiny of the nation we come together regardless of political forces- Malvinas is a national cause,” she added.

The statement comes as London has refused to engage in the UN-initiated talks on the de-colonization of the islands, instead opting to deploy its most sophisticated warship, HMS Dauntless and a nuclear submarine to the South Atlantic to prevent Argentina’s possible counter-move.

The Malvinas Islands, located about 300 miles off Argentina’s coast and home to about 3,000 inhabitants, have been declared part of the British Overseas Territories since Britain established its colonial rule on the islands in 1833.

Britain and Argentina also fought a 74-day war in 1982 over the islands, which ended with the British side claiming victory over the Argentineans.
