A monument to Argentine soldiers who were killed in the 1982 war between Britain and Argentina over the sovereignty of the Malvinas has been desecrated. The vandalism was discovered by an Argentinean national living in the archipelago.
On Wednesday 1 August, Argentina’s Foreign Ministry released an official statement saying Argentina is “strongly convinced that through dialogue and respect for United Nations resolutions acts of vandalism such as those we are today deploring could be avoided and neutralized”.
The monument is located at the Argentine Military Cemetery in Darwin where there are the remains of 238 Argentine soldiers killed during the 74-day war with Britain.
The Malvinas Families Commission condemned the act as “an act of profanation” and said the cemetery had been “the victim of an act of vandalism, the responsibility for which is still unknown”.
Dispute over the sovereignty of the Malvinas islands between Britain and Argentina has become heated recently with Argentina calling for negotiations and Britain ruling out the possibility for negotiations.
