Argentina mulls halting imports from UK

The Industry Minister, herself, called the bosses of at least 20 firms to urge them to replace imports from Britain with goods produced elsewhere, according to the state news agency Telam.

The industry ministry is trying to reduce Argentina’s trade deficit with the UK and establish policies that favour countries that recognize Argentina’s territorial claim, Telam reported.

In recent months the government of President Cristina Fernandez has stepped up its campaign to assert sovereignty over Malvinas, rallying regional support for its claim.

Besides, it is yet another Argentine message to England, as the diplomatic spat over the Malvinas Islands’ sovereignty continues.

Industry sources confirmed that their goal is to stop the Argentina’s decreasing trade surplus with England and to create a trade relationship with nations that respect territorial sovereignty, according to the report.

“It is fundamental for Argentina to determine its strategic trade partners, and at the same time, send a clear signal to those who are still using colonialism as a way of gaining access to other people’s natural resources,” ministry sources said.

The move is linked to the dispute with Britain over the Falkland Islands, which Argentina claims as the Malvinas. Tension has been rising ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Falklands war between the two sides of the conflict.

On Monday, two cruise ships were turned back from the Argentine port of Ushuaia, apparently because they had visited the Falklands.

The Falklands, located off the southern coast of Argentina, have been under British control since 1833.
A 74-day war in 1982 cost the lives of 649 Argentine troops, 255 British troops and three Falkland Islanders, with Britain retaining control.

The United Nations has called on Britain to start talk on decolonization, but London has refused to do so.
