(ANSA) – Rome, January 3 – The archbishop of Turin announced Tuesday he believed that parish recreation centres were needed in shopping malls in order to attract a declining youth congregation. “The Church needs to become more of a missionary,” said Monsignor Cesare Nosiglia. “It should go and meet young people where they are”. Nosiglia, who is also Northern Italy’s vice president of the Italian Bishops Conference, said that the youth of today feel distant from the Church which does not actively seek them.
“When I speak to young people, they don’t thank me for what I have to say, but for having gone and sought them out,” he said. “Perhaps we should open parish recreation centres in shopping malls and other entertainment areas, rather than expecting them to come to us”.
