Araqchi: Inactive centrifuges to be collected

Tehran, Nov 29, IRNA – Head of the Foreign Ministry’s Committee for Following Up the Implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Abbas Araqchi, said on Sunday that inactive centrifuges will be collected.

Speaking on the sidelines of memorial service for for ambassador to Beirut Ghazanfar Roknabadi, who lost his life in the September 24 Hajj Stampede, Araqchi said that a number of centrifuges will remain in Natanz and Fordo nuclear sites .

‘Up to now, a number of centrifuges, that were not active have been collected and a number of centrifuges that are active and are busy enriching, will be kept in Natanz and Fordo,’ said Araqchi.

Asked about the comment of the members of the Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission that 9,000 semi-active and 6,200 other centrifuges have been collected, Araqchi said the the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran is in charge of tackling the issue.

‘They act based on their own timetable to collect centrifuges and of course that coincides with the roadmap with the International Atomic Energy Agency.’

He said the inactive centrifuges have been collected, adding that a number of the centrifuges, being active, will remain as more than 5,000 centrifuges will be kept in Natanz and more than 1,000 in Fordo and also, an extra number will be collected gradually.

Asked whether the G5+1 is going to release a letter on former issues between Iran and the IAEA, Araqchi said that the IAEA Board of Governors is expected to make decision about closure of the issues of the past in line with context of the JCPOA.

‘We are busy in consultation and the statements exactly meaning closure of the file by the Board of Governors.’
Asked what would happen if it is not closed, he said, ‘Our case is fully clear and the PMD case should be closed completely so that the JCPOA is continued to be implemented, otherwise we will not implement those parts of our commitments whose implementation depends on clearance of the alleged PMD according to the JCPOA.’

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Sunday that Iranian nuclear program had never ‘possible military dimensions’ and the charge has been fabricated by the enemies of the Iranian nation.
