Apple to hold media event at the end of January?

According to a report by AllThingsD.com, Apple has already planned its first event of 2012, and it has been scheduled for the end of January. However, before you rush to put your iPad 2 on eBay, it’s unlikely to herald the arrival of the iPad 3, or in fact, any new hardware.

As with most rumors surrounding Apple, the story is attributed to chatty “sources close to the situation,” and they’re describing the gathering as “media-related.” It’s also said to take place in New York, rather than the San Francisco or Cupertino locations usually used to take the covers off a new product.

Apple’s Senior VP of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue, is expected to be present. He was last seen on stage describing iCloud in June, and before that he took questions alongside the team responsible for the iPad-only newspaper, The Daily, at the beginning of 2011.

Mr. Cue’s background is in the creation of both the App Store and the iTunes Music store, and he has also recently been working with Apple’s iAd division, which is apparently waiting to have a new vice president appointed.

So, none of this points to the launch of the iPad 3, nor the rumored Apple television, or some currently unheard of product. Instead, it seems logical to expect a software-related announcement.

It’s all speculation at the moment, but if Apple does have an event set for January it shouldn’t be long before the invitations start to appear, at which time we could see some clues to its content.
