Residents of Shapira neighborhood hold demonstration, decide to create security squads in wake of recent firebomb attack
Two days after firebombs were hurled at the homes of African migrants in south Tel Aviv, some 150 residents of the Shapira neighborhood rallied under the banner “The safety of our home and existence.” No unusual incidents were recorded during the protest.
A decision to hold the protest was made after residents discussed the matter in a meeting at a local youth center. The meeting exposed disagreements between those who opposed the presence of foreigners in the neighborhood and those who sought to find a creative solution to the situation.
“We have decided to create squads that will hold patrols in the neighborhood every day,” said Dorit, a local resident. She said that the residents are also organizing a protest outside the prime minister’s residence in Jerusalem and are planning to put pressure on Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai. “The aim is to create a dialogue with the refugees’ representatives and join forces vis-à-vis the prime minister to get things moving.”
Smadi, another resident said: “We don’t want war and have decided to work together with the refugees, to turn to the municipality in the purpose of dispersing them across the country and point a finger at the Knesset, which is responsible for the situation.”
Firebombs were hurled overnight Friday at four homes in which African migrants reside and towards another apartment which also serves as a kindergarten. No injuries were reported, but the structures were damaged.
