“Syria is closer to Democracy than all states which are calling for freedom inside Syria… if extremists rule Syria, then this will extend to Lebanon,” he said during a speech on Saturday.
Aoun was referring to efforts by Western countries in order to topple the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Syria has been the scene of unrest since March 2011.
On Saturday, people in Damascus gathered in Sabaa Bahrat Square to condemn foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs.
Qatar and Saudi Arabia are among the countries that have adopted a hawkish stance toward Syria since the beginning of unrest.
Doha and Riyadh, monarchies that are strangers to democracy, claim that they are supporting Syrian people’s democratic aspirations.
Damascus says “outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” are behind the country’s unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
