Anti-NATO protest held in Pakistan

While masses were already on the road with their “long march” towards Islamabad, the protesters on Friday demanded the government to shut down the lines permanently.

“We are protesting against the government’s decision to resume the NATO supplies, because these supplies are carrying little weapons and these are being used by US forces against us and our Muslim brothers,” a protester told Press TV correspondent during the rally.

Islamabad closed the border crossings used to transfer NATO supplies to Afghanistan in November 2011 after 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed in US-led airstrikes on two checkpoints on the Afghan border.

Leaders of the parties said by reopening the supply routes, the government has bypassed the parliamentary resolution which demanded that the US stop assassination drone attacks in Pakistan and make an apology for the deadly incident as preconditions for reopening the routes.

Although US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently announced in a statement that she offered “deepest regrets for the tragic incident” during a telephone conversation with her Pakistani counterpart, Hina Rabbani Khar, drone strikes have not halted.

Demonstrators said the government’s decision to resume the supplies was not in the national interest, saying the so-called US-led war on terror has cost Pakistan thousands of innocent lives, besides a staggering national economy.

Anti-US and anti-government protests continue to hit many cities across Pakistan since Islamabad reopened its supply routes for US-led foreign troops fighting in Afghanistan.

Protestors say they will stop the supplies to US-led forces in Afghanistan by any means, even by force, if the government fails to reverse its decision on the routes. They have also vowed to continue their protests until the withdrawal of US troops from the region.
