Another asylum seeker vessel has been intercepted off Christmas Island.
It came after a day of high drama with an asylum seeker vessel carrying 134 people sinking midway between Christmas Island and Indonesia.
Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said a Customs and Border Protection vessel intercepted the latest suspected irregular entry vessel north-west of Christmas Island on Wednesday night.
He said initial indications suggested there were 100 people on board.
“Arrangements will now be made for the passengers to be transferred to Christmas Island, where they will undergo initial security, health and identity checks and their reasons for travel will be established,” he said in a statement.
Australian navy vessels and commercial ships rescued 130 survivors and recovered one deceased person from the earlier boat, with another three believed lost on the sinking vessel.
