The navy has intercepted a boat carrying suspected asylum seekers near Christmas Island.
Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare on Saturday said patrol boat HMAS Ararat, operating under the control of Border Protection Command, intercepted the suspected irregular entry vessel northwest of Christmas Island on Saturday.
Initial indications suggest there are 87 passengers and one crew on board.
Authorities will transfer the passengers to Christmas Island for initial security, health and identity checks.
Mr Clare urged Opposition Leader Tony Abbott to vote to allow offshore processing in Malaysia and Nauru in the wake of the interception.
“The consequence of Tony Abbott’s refusal to support the government’s offshore processing legislation – including an offer to reestablish a centre on Nauru – is more boat arrivals,” Immigration Minister Chris Bowen said in a statement on Saturday.
Opposition immigration spokesman Scott Morrison said the interception showed the government was failing on border security.
“This is a government of excuses, not action, on border protection,” he said in a statement.
