Annan urges Syrian sides to end violence

Briefing the UN General Assembly on Syria on Thursday, Annan said there is evidence of a ‘third party involvement’ in the ongoing crisis in the country.

Annan said the armed opposition groups have intensified their attacks, and warned that if the international community waits longer to resolve the crisis, the situation on the ground will become radicalized.

He also said his six-point peace plan is not being implemented either by the government or the armed opposition. However, he said it is the government’s responsibility to end the violence.

The briefing came following reports of a new killing of Syrian civilians which occurred in the central village of al-Qubeir in Hama Province, on Wednesday.

Damascus has condemned the “heinous crime in Hama,” but stated that only nine people have been killed in the violence, criticizing media reports for “contributing to spilling the blood of Syrians.”

Many people, including members of the security forces, have been killed in the turmoil that began in Syria in March 2011.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing the protesters, but Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, stating that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
