Annan due in China to discuss Syria

The visit comes after a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in which Anan offered his proposal to the Kremlin.

Moscow announced that it supports Annan’s peace mission and urged him to work with both sides of the conflict in Syria.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei also said on Monday that Beijing backs Annan’s efforts to help solve the Syrian crisis

He added that China hopes for a “fair, peaceful and proper solution.”

Russia and China oppose Western pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The two permanent members of the UN Security Council are calling for a negotiated solution to the unrest in Syria.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March and many people, including security forces, have lost their lives in the violence.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing the protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
