The FBI had known about the spy ring for a decade and the spies’ homes were
bugged.
According to US officials familiar with the case, Mr Foley, a student at
George Washington University, stood up and saluted “Mother Russia”
when asked to follow in his parents’ footsteps. He also agreed to travel to
Russia to begin formal espionage training.
The officials told the Wall Street Journal that surveillance suggested there
was a longer-term plan to recruit more of the group’s children.
A lawyer who acted for Mr Heathfield dismissed the allegations.
