(JTA) — The European telecom company Altice, owned by Patrick Drahi, a French billionaire with Israeli citizenship, will take over the U.S. cable television operator Cablevision.

Altice’s purchase price for the company, which will become the fourth largest cable operator in the United States, is $17.7 billion, Alticeannounced Thursday.

Cablevision is the leading operator in the New York metropolitan area, which includes New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

“The strategy of Altice in the large and highly strategic US market is reinforced with the acquisition of Cablevision,” Drahi said in a statement. “We will be in a stronger position, as in all other markets in which we operate, to deliver the best services, invest in the most advanced technology, and develop innovative products for the benefit of our customers.”

(JTA) — On Saturday, the Spanish language television network Univision will host the final broadcast of “Sábado Gigante.”

With 53 years on TV, the world’s longest-running variety show is an eclectic, strange mashup of a game show, a talk show and live entertainment. There are singing competitions — the poor-performing contestants are eliminated by a trumpet blast, a la “The Gong Show” — as well as lie-detector tests for husbands accused of infidelity, comedy segments and beauty contests. (Check out a montage of clips from the show’s 50th anniversary here.)

Each week, the three-hour hodgepodge is broadcast in 40 countries and watched by tens of millions of viewers. With a reach beyond the Spanish-language market — it’s been the subject of parodies on “Saturday Night Live” and “The Colbert Report” — “Sábado Gigante” is a well-known pop-culture phenomenon.

Less known, however, is that Don Francisco, the show’s Chilean creator and host, is Jewish.

(JTA) — In a move described as symbolic, the municipal government of Iceland’s capital city announced a boycott of all Israeli products.

The Reykjavik City Council passed a resolution Tuesday saying that the municipality would not purchase any Israeli goods “as long as the occupation of Palestinian territories continues,” Iceland Magazine reported.

In an explanatory memo, the council said the City of Reykjavik supports the right of Palestinians to independence and condemns “the Israeli policy of apartheid” in the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem. The resolution does not identify any products or companies it plans to boycott, and it is not clear whether the municipality currently purchases anything manufactured in Israel, according to Ynet.

Bjork Vilhelmsdottir, a councilwoman with the Social Democratic Alliance, introduced the motion.
