A furious Victorian father who insulted his adult daughter in court has been ordered to pay her nearly $5500 to help cover her university costs.
The man, who has not been identified, launched an angry tirade against his daughter in court this week, saying she should “quit being a student and sweep streets,” the Herald Sun reports.
But federal magistrate Philip Burchardt ordered the man to pay a lump sum of nearly $5500, and slammed his “unrelenting diatribe” as nothing but a “rage-filled series of insults”.
Mr Burchard said the man should sell his car if he can’t afford to pay it.
The woman had been seeking money from her father since 2010, when a court ordered him to pay $84.40 a week, but he only met the payments for around three months.
Mr Burchardt said the case was very regrettable and the extreme dislike between the daughter and her father was obvious.
Among other insults, the father claimed his daughter was a “stranger” trying to hurt him, saying: “I don’t know her. I’ve had enough of her. I wish she’d bugger off”.
Mr Burchardt said he was forced to leave the bench at one stage to let the man compose himself.
The father did not try to challenge his daughter’s claim about her income of $200 a week, and documents showed his mortgage had decreased substantially since she started court action against him.
