Marc and dad Des Hemsley, 65, were on a fishing trip off Shoreham, West Sussex, when the 41-year-old son snared the 36lbs 8oz fish.

He spent 25 minutes reeling in the cod before taking it back to shore where it was officially weighed.

It was then that roofer Marc realised he had broken his dad’s 22 year record of 34lbs 8oz for the biggest boat-caught cod in Shoreham Harbour.

But Des had the last laugh after he took home the prized catch and made 15 extra-large portions out of it.

It is thought a fish mongers would have paid between 100 to 150 pounds for such a specimen.

Des, also a roofer, said: ‘I knew as soon as I saw the fish on the deck that it was going to beat my record.

‘Marc was pleased but I was even more chuffed because it felt like we are keeping the records in the family.

‘He doesn’t eat fish so he ended up giving it to me. I filleted it and made 15 portions out of it.

‘The flakes on it are about the size of two 50p pieces. It’s gorgeous to taste, especially in bread crumbs.’

Marc, whose previous biggest catch was a 26lb cod, said: ‘I knew it was a decent size when it took my bait of cuttle fish.

‘When we got it on the boat the first thing dad said was “you’ve beaten it.”

‘He is more chuffed than I am to be honest because we have kept the record in the family.’

The heaviest cod caught ever in UK waters was a massive 58 pounds 8 ounces. The fish was caught from association boat Sea Trek back in 1992 at Whitby.

Oh God the poor, poor fish. What a tragic end. How people can delight in hurting others is beyond me.

well done ive spent hundreds if not thousands of hours on our shore line trying to catch the elusive double figure cod .i love the excitement watching the northerly winds blow up across the sea tuning it grey and rough rollers breaking in knowing the cods not far behind and as the dark comes and snow im there getting all the gear ready and in the car im like a kid at christmas .one day my double will come but untill that day im gonna be huddeld in some corner watching that rod in the dark

Buy a man a fish and he will feed his family for a day, teach a man to fish and he will be able to feed his family forever. Cracking fish and nice to see the joy on the faces of Father and Son with their respective ‘record’ catches.

“but I feel a little sad that this gentle giant was not allowed to go free”.
Engage brain before putting foot in mouth! Cod are top predators and anything but gentle!

An amazing catch….I remember as a lad then a young man growing up in South Wales, during the 70s 80s that my friends I would fish the coastline several nights a week during the winter with high tech 16ft carbon composite rods for codling weighing up to 12 or 14 lbs. Over the course of a good winter we would normally catch several decent cod most years our efforts gave us at least one into double figures each. During the summer we fished the power station outfalls for bass all along the coastline for doggies, rays giant congas. At Christmas I had the opportunity to return to the UK call on my old fishing buddy who told me that there were almost no more fish to catch in the Bristol Chanel that like everyone else we used to fish with, he had sold all of his sea fishing gear to now fish only catch return fresh water lakes instead….I never thought I would ever hear him say that he had gone over to the dark side of fresh water, catching tidlers with maggots!

A gallon of bitter and fish and chips on the why home the food of the gods!

I know they ate what the fished, nothing wrong with that, but I feel a little sad that this gentle giant was not allowed to go free

It looks much nicer in the metal and glass cabinets at the chippy!!

First teh father then the son?? Sounds fishy to me.
