Anders Behring Breivik ‘asked for Band-Aid when arrested’

Mr Gaasbakk described a calm man who expressed himself as a soldier, “clear and concise,” and who said he wanted to launch “negotiations” as quickly as possible.

The description of Breivik’s composure is important, since his sanity is the focal point of his 10-week trial and will determine whether he is sent to prison or a closed psychiatric ward.

Breivik is intent upon proving his sanity to ensure his Islamophobic ideology is not written off as the rantings of a lunatic.

According to Gaasbakk, Breivik had said he was part of “three cells”.

“The first struck in Oslo, the second, that is me here, and the third had not struck yet but it will be hell for the police,” he had said.

His words led the police officer to sound the national alarm, but in the following weeks, investigators became convinced that the self-declared commander of a mysterious organisation called the Knights Templar had in fact acted alone.

Immediately after his arrest, Breivik complained that he had a small cut on his index finger and had asked for a Band-Aid, Mr Gaasbakk recalled, drawing ironic laughs from onlookers.

The police officer said he had answered: “That is not a priority. Look around you.” Utoya was then still covered in dozens of bodies.
