And his 33-day plan to beat Gillard (and guess who else)

THE Coalition is prepared for a Kevin Rudd return with a 33-day election campaign in the event Labor changes leader and calls a snap election.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott taunted the government that he could beat a new Labor leader, including Mr Rudd – the elephant in Julia Gillard’s room. Polls have consistently shown Mr Rudd would be a more popular leader than Ms Gillard and, if he returned, he may capitalise and call an early election.

“There would certainly be a different political dynamic but I think that whoever the Labor party puts up, they’re eminently beatable,” Mr Abbott said.

An Essential Poll released yesterday showed most voters think Ms Gillard will be rolled as leader within 12 months.

Just 26 per cent of those polled believed Ms Gillard would still be Prime Minister next Christmas with 55 per cent believing she would go, including more than a third of Labor voters.

More than 33 per cent think the Coalition will punt Mr Abbott in the next year, but 41 per cent think he will hold on.

In two party support the government rose 1 per cent to 46 per cent and the Coalition slid one point to 54 per cent.

Mr Abbott said the Coalition was ready for an election and candidates in key seats had been prepared.
