An Open Letter and Appeal to American Academicians, Politicians and Citizens:
In recognition of the unique scholarly, historical, and humanitarian importance of the work and witness of Kevin Annett, M.A., M.Div.
August 24, 2021
Last May, the mass graves of children were unearthed at a former Indian residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia. Since then, a wave of media interest and popular outrage has swept the world regarding the planned genocide of generations of indigenous children by Canadian church and state.
Unfortunately, what has not been reported is that this discovery and the growing awareness of Crimes against Humanity in Canada has been the result of the sustained and pioneering work of one man for over a quarter century: a scholar and former United Church clergyman named Kevin Annett.
In the words of Professor Noam Chomsky,
“Kevin Annett is far more deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize than are many who have received it in the past.” (August 9, 2002)
Years before it became fashionable and safe to speak of the Indian residential school genocide, Kevin Annett initiated and led every public campaign in Canada to document, expose and prosecute the individuals and institutions responsible for the torture and death of more than 60,000 children. He did so against enormous odds and the opposition of all official Canadian society, after being wrongfully fired and “defrocked” by his church, blacklisted, assaulted, smeared, and stripped of his family and livelihood.
Through nothing else than courage and persistence, Kevin and a handful of indigenous people built a grassroots movement that eventually forced the Canadian government to acknowledge its homegrown genocide, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did publicly on June 3, 2019. Such an achievement by a persecuted and penniless man is nothing short of remarkable, and even epic.
(A Chronology of this campaign and a list of media coverage of it can be seen at http://murderbydecree.com/2021/07/17/a-timeline-of-events-that-exposed-genocide-in-canada/#page-content )
What is especially important about Kevin Annett’s achievement is that it has been the result of his meticulous documentation of the Canadian genocide based on eyewitness testimonies, archival documentation and forensic investigations. That work has been summarized in Kevin’s numerous books, documentary films and years of public lecturing, advocacy, and protest.
As early as the summer of 1998, Kevin proved conclusively that the enormous death rate in the church-run residential schools was not the result of random “abuses” or underfunding but arose from a deliberate policy and practice of race-targeted extermination devised by the Canadian government and its churches in 1889 and continuing until 1996. This fact was affirmed by the investigations of the first and only independent Tribunal into Canadian Indian residential school crimes, convened in Vancouver in June 1998 by the United Nations affiliate IHRAAM.
When that Tribunal eventually recommended to the United Nations that Canada and the Catholic, Anglican and United Church be publicly charged with genocide, it based its findings on Kevin Annett’s voluminous research and the sworn testimonies of dozens of eyewitnesses to genocide. And yet the United Nations, under pressure from Canada, refused to act on the Tribunal’s proposals.
Nevertheless, Kevin Annett persisted over the years that followed, and by his scrupulous research and unrelenting public presence eventually forced Christian Canada to face its undeniable legacy of mass murder.
In the words of former Member of Parliament Gary Merasty, who introduced the House of Commons motion to “apologize” for the residential school crimes after he had viewed Kevin’s documentary film Unrepentant,
“Kevin Annett has made all of us sit up and take notice.” (July 12, 2007)
Unfortunately, Kevin Annett remains an unsung hero and a prophet without honor in his own land. An unending campaign of misinformation and character assassination has been aimed at Kevin by the powerful interests exposed by him as criminals: the churches, the federal government, the RCMP, certain multinational corporations profiting in stolen native land, and even some collaborating aboriginal politicians.
That campaign, as false and scurrilous as it is, has had a deadly impact on the man without whom the residential school genocide would have remained secret. Even though he has the love and trust of many indigenous people for his work, and has been adopted into the Anishinabe and Mohawk nations, Kevin Annett remains an exile in his own land.
Kevin is presently unemployable, marginalized, and shut out of the official discourse on the Canadian genocide, even when academia, the media, the government and even the guilty churches use Kevin’s evidence and work to their own ends without ever citing him as the source. Kevin Annett remains in effect a banned person in his own country, and yet he continues to bear witness to a history and a crime that is once again being erased.
The people and the government of the United States have a special obligation to support Kevin Annett and give him the platform denied by his own people, and not only because of the outstanding uniqueness of his work. Kevin is half American and is a brilliant scholar and inspiring public speaker, and a living embodiment of the best of the Christian tradition. He is one of the world’s foremost experts on the Canadian residential school genocide and of religious imperialism in North America.
Kevin’s qualities are of great relevance and much in need today in America, in the wake of the US Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland’s announcement last summer of the commencement of a nation-wide investigation into the disappearance of native children in American Indian boarding schools. Kevin Annett should be an integral part of such an investigation because of the depth of his experience, knowledge, and expertise.
This Open Letter is a special appeal to academics and government officials in the United States. We urge you to invite and employ Kevin Annett as part of the scholarly and investigative work to uncover and write the true story of the tragic genocide in America that was aimed at and destroyed countless children. For their memory and to prevent future such crimes, we need the efforts of proven men of integrity like Kevin Annett who has paid up personally and led by example.
We urge you to acquaint yourselves with the history, work and research of Kevin Annett and the movement he has engendered by consulting www.murderbydecree.com . Kevin can be contacted at [email protected] and 236-380-4508. A biography of Kevin follows.
