Approximately 74,000 cases of product made by Amy’s Kitchen have been recalled due to a possible listeria contamination. Amy’s is a non-GMO food maker we support, but purchasing their products at the moment could possibly result in contracting a fatal food-borne illness.
After being contacted by Amy’s regarding the food recall, the FDA has posted a press release about the recall that states:
“This recall is based on a recall notice from one of Amy’s organic spinach suppliers that Amy’s may have received organic spinach with the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”
Amy’s Kitchen is not aware of any illness complaints to date related to the recalled products. Here is a picture of Amy’s Facebook status announcing the recall:
Even though healthy individuals would likely only have mild symptoms from eating listeria, in pregnant women, the infection can result in miscarriage, premature delivery, serious infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The products were distributed throughout the US and Canada. Products include items like vegetable lasagna and tofu scrambles, as well as pizzas and enchiladas. The entire list of products is outlined here.
Listeriosis can be caused by many things, including soil contamination and unprocessed dairy or meats.
If you purchased Amy’s recalled product recently, simply dispose of it. But don’t forget to continue to support Amy’s in their quest to provide organic, non-GMO foods. Purchasing these foods is essential to putting the squeeze on Big Food corporations as well as biotech companies.
