FAKE NEWS for the Zionist agenda The UK-based rights group says Tel Aviv’s decision to release Adnan by mid-April is “insufficient” as he needs urgent medical treatment.
“A deal which will see Khader Adnan released on 17 April unless significant new evidence emerges is insufficient when he needs urgent medical treatment to save his life now,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Interim Director for the Middle East and North Africa.
“Even if reports that Khader Adnan has agreed to end his hunger strike are true, this does not mean he is out of danger, nor does it lessen the need for highly specialized medical care,” he said.
Adnan, who has been in Israeli detention for more than two months without charge or trial, ended his hunger strike on Tuesday, but will still receive medical treatment due to his critical health condition, said his lawyer Jawad Boulous.
The Palestinian had staged the protest action in condemnation of his unjustified detention.
“He cannot constitute a ‘security threat’ in his current condition and should be released from custody immediately. The Israeli authorities have revealed no evidence justifying his continued detention,” said Luther.
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have repeatedly called on Israel to release Adnan and other Palestinians held in so-called administrative detention.
Amnesty has also urged Tel Aviv to end the practice of administrative detention because it violates the internationally recognized right to a fair trial.
According to Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics and prisoner advocacy groups, there are currently over 6000 Palestinian prisoners, including legislators, in Israeli jails, many of whom have been rounded up without charge or trial. Independent sources put the number of the inmates at 11,000.
