Amnesty censures Greece over migrants

“Greece’s failure to respect the rights of migrants and asylum-seekers is taking on the proportions of a humanitarian crisis,” Amnesty spokesman John Dalhuisen said in a statement on Thursday.

The human rights group accused Athens of systematically detaining thousands of asylum-seekers and refugees, including many children, in “appalling conditions,” calling it a “breach of international standards.”

It also blamed the Greek government for its failure to provide the most basic requirements of safety and shelter to the thousands of migrants crossing the country’s borders.

“Greece is clearly failing very significantly to absorb and respect the rights of the many migrants that are crossing its land and sea borders with Turkey.”

“It would not be an exaggeration to say that the EU has a humanitarian crisis not beyond its borders, not on its borders, but within its borders,” the statement added.

The rights group also accused the Greek police of even knifing one group’s inflatable dinghy and sending another boatload of people back with no life vests.

The situation in Greece today is “totally undeserving of the Nobel Peace Prize recently awarded to the European Union,” Amnesty stated.

Earlier in December, the European Union received the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize in the Norwegian capital of Oslo for helping a “continent of war to becoming a continent of peace.”

Greece is a major gateway for Asian and African asylum-seekers and migrants as they try to enter the European Union.

Amnesty International also called on Greek authorities to “condemn in a loud voice and effectively investigate and prosecute all racially-motivated violence.”
