‘Americans want faster Afghan pullout’

According to the survey conducted by the Washington-based Gallup Daily News company, which was released on Thursday, 50 percent of Americans say the United States should accelerate withdrawal from Afghanistan, while 24 percent prefer sticking to the current timetable to leave by the end of 2014.

Another 21 percent say the United States should stay as long as it takes to accomplish its goals.

More than a third of Americans said their opinions on how long American troops should remain in Afghanistan have changed because of events there in recent weeks.

The vast majority of those whose opinions have changed, 27 percent of Americans in total, said they now think the United States should withdraw sooner than they previously thought.

The findings come as the Afghan government on Thursday announced that it wants to take control of the country’s security from the United States in 2013 and not 2014 as previously planned.

According to official figures released by the website icasualties.org, a total of 1,911 American soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since October 2001, when the US-led invasion of the country began.

The war was launched under the pretext of removing the Taliban from power; however, insecurity has been growing across the country, despite the presence there of tens of thousands of US-led forces.
