The poll was carried out by Gallup ordered by the USA Today on July 19-22, 2012, through phone interview with 1,030 American adults as respondents. The results were made public on July 24, 2012.
The participants were asked whether Romney’s policies or those of Obama will be better for the US budget deficit, economic situation, job creation, taxation, healthcare and foreign policy.
Fifty-five percent of respondents believed Romney will be a better option for reducing the federal budget deficit, while 36 percent supported Obama.
As for economic performance, 51 percent preferred Romney over Obama while 50 and 49 percent respectively favored him over Obama in terms of job creation and taxation.
Romney and Obama stood on equal par in terms of healthcare policy (each favored by 47 percent), but in terms of foreign policy, 52 percent of respondents believed that Obama was superior to Romney.
Asked about personal traits of Obama and Romney like charisma as well as being understanding, honest and trustworthy, 60 percent of participants said they liked Obama more than Romney with 30 percent preferring Romney over Obama.
Some 50 percent said Obama understood everyday problems of Americans better as opposed to 39 percent who said Romney was more understanding. As for honesty and trustworthiness, 47 percent chose Obama against 39 percent who said Romney was most honest and trustworthy. Forty-one percent said Obama would live up to his promises against 46 percent who believed Romney did better in this regard.
According to experts, the results of such polls indicate the American people’s dissatisfaction with Obama’s economic performance.
Political analysts say the majority of Americans believe Obama has a more flexible foreign policy in comparison with his predecessor George W. Bush.
Over the past months, Romney has said he would support an Israeli military strike on Iran over the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program.
